Tips for a good night’s sleep

We all know that sleep is important, but not just any sleep. Here are a few tips to help you get a good night’s sleep.

We all know that sleep is important, but not just any sleep. We must sleep well. We must give our rest the importance it deserves in our daily life and our health in general.

We do not make up for lost sleep

One of the first things to keep in mind is that the hours we do not sleep we can no longer recover. There is no point in sleeping less for a few days with the idea of making up for it later.

The quality of sleep is a matter of perseverance, it is a daily work that can provide us with many benefits or bring us dire consequences. In previous articles we have already talked about the main consequences of lack of sleep, so now let’s focus on how to get a good night’s sleep.

Sleep duration

There are many factors that determine how well you sleep. One of the main ones is duration. Depending on our age, we will need more or less hours of sleep to function properly. As a general rule, the older we get, the less sleep we need. Infants should sleep between 12 and 17 hours, toddlers between 9 and 13 hours. From the age of 13 or 14, the number of hours recommended for a good night’s sleep decreases. Adolescents and young adults need between 8 and 10 hours, while adults need between 7 and 9 hours. For people over 65 years of age, 7 or 8 hours is sufficient.

One of the main consequences of not getting enough sleep according to our age is the loss of concentration. When we do not get a good night’s sleep, we do not rest properly. Not getting enough rest decreases our cognitive capacity and we may experience difficulty in performing daily activities or have short-term memory lapses.

Be aware of your circadian rhythms

Another important factor to consider for a good night’s sleep is our circadian rhythms. They are in charge of controlling our biological clock to regulate physiological functions such as eating or sleeping according to environmental rhythms. For this reason, the absence of sunlight predisposes us more to sleep. In this regard, it is necessary to have a routine and try to get up and go to bed at the same time to establish sleep patterns.

The time it takes to fall asleep from the moment we get into bed is also important. To sleep well, it is advisable to take less than half an hour to fall asleep, although if it takes less than 5 or 10 minutes we can also consider it as an indicator of sleep deficit. Therefore, it should ideally take between 15 and 20 minutes to fall asleep.
